Task: Your Pop Art 3D self-portrait

Examples by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Presentation and task by Kostyn.
This is an Agamograph, a form of kinetic art made popular by Israeli artist, Yaacov Agam.

Alternate images in accordion: Agamograph
You are going to be given two identical pictures (your photo). You have to paint them in Pop Art style: one of them in black and white, and the second one in colors. Then... we are going to create a 3D optical illution: an agamograph.

Elements of art: LINES

TASKS

A.- Lines create forms:
Use an A4 sheet of paper and draw a shape with a pencil. You will have to work as the following example with a felt pen. When finished, erase the pencil. Do not use a ruler!.

Here you will find another example: La línea y la almeja.

B.- Lines create shapes:

Take a sheet of paper and create drawings using a continuous line (outline), similar to those you have seen in the video.

Have a look at last year's assignments.

  • Artist: Keith Haring. Look at these videos:

Let's play with the semaphor disks:

Now you can play with Haring.

What does an image tell? Self-portraits

There are many different ways to make a self-portrait. It doesn’t have to be a traditional drawing or a painting of your face.
Idea from: http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/elem/selfport.htm#Names
Making a self-portrait is a great way to express and explore your identity.

The idea is to do the silhouettes of your head and fill in your head with a magazine collage of what is going in your brain, what you prefer, what you are fond of...

Ideas to get you started: clothes, music, words, sports, food, people you admire, singers, actors...

Instructions:

Trace your head on two white papers (using the window). Then filled in the head shape with magazine images in one of the papers. The second one will be the template of the final frame of your self-portrait, so, you will have to cut out the inside part. Let's do it.

Here you will find some examples made by last year students.

Australia Day

Australia Day is on January 26 and commemorates the establishment of the first settlement at Port Jackson, now part of Sydney, in 1788. It is an opportunity for Australians to come together to celebrate their country and culture. There are reflections on the achievements of the nation and explorations of way to make the country even better in the future.

What do people do?

Many people have a day off work and use the day to picnic in a park, to go shopping or to play or to watch sports events. In some places, particularly Lake Burley Griffin, spectacular public fireworks displays are held. In addition, the Australian of the Year Awards are presented. These are awards for Australians who have made an outstanding contribution to their country or community.
In some towns and cities, citizenship ceremonies are held on Australia Day. These are ceremonies to welcome immigrants to the country who have been granted Australian citizenship. Although official, these ceremonies often have a festive atmosphere.

What are we going to do?

As one of our language assistants, Sebastian, is from Australia. He has made a great presentation about Australia Aboriginal Art. Soon we will have a lot of boomerangs decorated with aboriginal symbols! A very good way of introducing some of the visual elements of art (dots, lines, textures, colors, and shapes).

Click the image to go to Australian Art Page. You will see the presentation and the activity.

Discovering KIRIGAMI - space with paper, for Christmas

CHRISTMAS TREES
We are going to construct a pop-up Christmas Tree using another Japanese technique named Kirigami.

Here you will find the template to be downloaded:

Instructions. By Robert Sabuda.

We are going to use color paper and we will use them as hanging trees.

SNOWFLAKES
6-pointed Paper Snowflakes instructions. Kostyn proposed to do them and... it was a great idea! In fact is a good example of polygons and rotational symmetry.

Constructing a parallel through a point

This animation shows how to construct a line parallel to a given line that passes through a given point with compass and straightedge or ruler. It is called the 'angle copy method' because it works by using the fact that a transverse line drawn across two parallel lines creates pairs of equal corresponding angles.

Perpendicular at the endpoint of a ray

This animation shows how to cosntruct a perpendicular at the end of a ray with compass and straightedge or ruler. This construction works as a result of Thales Theorem.

Perpendicular to a line from an external point

This animation shows how to construct a perpendicular to a line through an external point, using only a compass and straightedge or ruler. It works by creating a line segment on the given line, then bisecting it. The bisector will be a right angles to the given line.

Perpendicular at a point on a line

This animation shows how to draw a perpendicular at a point on a line with compass and straightedge or ruler.

Perpendicular bisector

See perpendicular bisector construction. This construction shows how to draw the perpendicular bisector of a given line segment with compass and straightedge or ruler. This construction bisects the segment (divides it into two equal parts, and is perpendicular to it.

Line segment operations

COPYING A LINE SEGMENT
This page shows how to copy a line segment with compass and straightedge or ruler. Given a line segment, this shows how to make another segment of the same length.
